Measure the revenue result against the range actually issued
Accenture reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $18.68 billion on October 1, for the quarter ended August 31, 2026. The company reported a 15.3% GAAP operating margin. These results provide two different research questions: how revenue compared with the preceding guidance, and how much of the margin improvement depends on the prior-year baseline.
In its June 18 third-quarter release, Accenture guided fourth-quarter revenue to $17.75 billion–$18.4 billion. Using the rounded reported figures, the actual result exceeded that upper bound by $0.28 billion, or approximately 1.5%. The range midpoint was $18.075 billion; the result was approximately 3.3% above it. Those are comparisons with management’s June guidance, not with an independently verified analyst consensus.
Keep that distinction in an earnings worksheet. A result can exceed a company’s prior range without necessarily exceeding the market’s latest expectations. This article does not establish a share-price reaction or attribute any movement to the release. The verified comparison is useful on its own, provided the benchmark and its date remain attached to the calculation.
The prior-year margin tells two different stories
Accenture’s fiscal 2025 fourth-quarter release reported an 11.6% GAAP operating margin and a 15.1% adjusted operating margin. The adjusted measure excluded business optimization costs. The historical release therefore provides two valid but differently defined starting points, rather than a single interchangeable margin number.
Against the prior reported margin, the latest reported margin is higher by 3.7 percentage points, or 370 basis points. Against the prior adjusted margin, the difference is 0.2 percentage point, or 20 basis points. Both calculations can be correct. They answer different questions about the same latest result.
The larger comparison includes the effect of comparing against a period containing excluded costs. The smaller comparison puts the prior period on the company’s adjusted basis. Neither should be presented as the only acceptable lens, and the adjusted comparison does not make the original costs unreal or irrelevant to shareholders.
For a clear research note, write each row with its full label: current GAAP versus prior GAAP, followed by current GAAP versus prior adjusted. Do not silently change the comparison halfway through a paragraph. That simple discipline makes the headline improvement easier to evaluate without dismissing genuine operating progress.

The October release’s reconciliation identifies the business optimization actions as initiated in fiscal 2025’s fourth quarter and completed in fiscal 2026’s first quarter, primarily involving employee severance. That timing helps explain why the comparison requires attention to the expense base.
It does not establish that every improvement came from one item. To investigate the underlying economics, separate changes in sales, delivery costs, corporate expenses and any disclosed adjustments. Use the company’s definitions consistently and preserve unresolved questions where the release does not provide enough detail for a full bridge.
A useful review asks whether an adjustment is specific to the period, whether similar costs appear elsewhere in the historical record, and whether the cash consequences occur in the same period as the expense. These are follow-up questions, not assertions that an excluded item is recurring or that its cash payment has already occurred.
Avoid turning the revenue beat into an explanation for the entire margin change. Revenue and margin are related measures, but the information needed to reconcile one is not identical to the information needed to reconcile the other. The purpose of the worksheet is to connect them with disclosed evidence rather than a convenient narrative.
What would make the next update more informative
Start the next review with the same three documents: the current result, the guidance that preceded it and the prior-year reconciliation. Preserve the original versions so a later forecast revision cannot accidentally replace the benchmark used for this quarter.
Then maintain separate entries for observed performance and forward-looking expectations. An actual result belongs in the completed-period record. A new management range belongs in a future-period record, with its assumptions and measurement basis attached. Moving between the two without changing the date label can make a forecast look like an accomplished result.
The next useful evidence would show whether performance remains strong on comparable definitions and whether any changes are explained consistently. This quarter supports a documented revenue outperformance against the prior company range. Assessing its durability requires later results, while evaluating the quality of margin expansion requires keeping both historical baselines in view.
