A strong quarter needs more than one earnings comparison
ASML's October 14 results show a stronger operating business, but the headline profit figure also includes an investment-related gain. Investors researching the Nasdaq-listed equipment supplier should separate those two developments before extrapolating the quarter.
The company reported third-quarter sales of €11.7 billion and a 57.5% gross margin. Its fourth-quarter sales outlook is €14.2 billion–€15.2 billion, with gross margin around 57%. Full-year revenue guidance is €44 billion–€45 billion. These are company forecasts, not completed sales or a market consensus comparison.
The useful question is how much of the improvement reflects equipment and upgrade economics that can continue. A larger reported profit is informative, but its components can carry different implications for the next quarter. The analysis should preserve that distinction instead of assigning the same persistence to every euro.
Upgrades are part of the capacity story
In the accompanying management interview, CFO Roger Dassen said Installed Base revenue was approximately €400 million above guidance at €3.3 billion. He linked that strength primarily to customer upgrades and identified the installed-base business as an important driver of the margin result.
This matters because capacity is not solely a count of newly delivered machines. Increasing output from equipment already in place can also address customers' production needs. For the research thesis, that creates two questions: whether customers continue buying upgrades, and whether the economics of that business remain favorable as the mix changes.
It would be premature to treat this quarter's margin as a permanent floor. A useful follow-up comparison pairs the installed-base result with total gross margin, then asks management to explain changes in mix. Revenue growth alone does not establish that the same profitability will repeat.

The unaudited US GAAP statements report €5.173 billion of operating income and a separate €509.7 million gain on equity investments. Net income was €4.960 billion. The management interview identifies approximately €500 million from revaluing the first Mistral AI investment tranche.
The placement of that gain matters. It is not equipment revenue and does not explain gross margin. It also should not be subtracted mechanically from net income to invent an adjusted earnings figure: a defensible after-tax adjustment would require the relevant tax treatment and a clearly stated method.
For a first-pass comparison, retain the reported net income and examine operating income separately. That preserves the official figures while avoiding the assumption that an investment valuation change is interchangeable with selling or servicing more systems. It also avoids presenting an analyst-created adjustment as a company metric.
Cash strength needs its own bridge
Quarterly operating cash flow was €11.798 billion, with a €7.009 billion positive contribution from changes in assets and liabilities in the cash-flow statement. Those figures describe the quarter ended September 27, 2026; they are not nine-month totals.
A working-capital contribution can make a quarter's cash generation much larger than its profit. The summary line alone does not identify every underlying collection, payment or customer advance. This article therefore does not attribute the full movement to deposits, nor treat it as a repeatable quarterly run rate.
The practical follow-up is to reconcile the cash-flow bridge against more detailed disclosures when available. A good earnings model should show separately what comes from profitability and what comes from the timing of balance-sheet movements. Combining them into one growth assumption would conceal the source of cash.
What would strengthen or weaken the thesis
ASML says currently planned supply would not fully satisfy customer demand in 2027 and 2028, and it is investigating further capacity expansion. That is management's assessment of demand and supply, not a guarantee that every prospective order becomes revenue.
The next checks are concrete: delivery execution, upgrade demand, the margin associated with the sales mix, and the distinction between customer interest and firm commitments. Strong demand can coexist with a difficult production ramp. Conversely, successful upgrades could contribute even while new-equipment capacity is being expanded.
An investor should become more confident when subsequent disclosures connect those demand statements to delivered output and operating results. Confidence should weaken if that connection deteriorates or if a profit comparison increasingly depends on items outside operations. The quarter supports a stronger operating narrative; it still calls for separate treatment of investment gains and cash timing.
