Services offers a clearer operating test
Citigroup's October 13 third-quarter results showed reported diluted earnings per share rising 53% from a year earlier. That headline combines operating progress with a comparison against a quarter containing a Banamex goodwill impairment. For investors in Citi, the more useful question is whether its transaction Services franchise is producing growth that can survive a less favorable comparison period.
Services supplies evidence of that progress: revenue increased 15%, ahead of its 10% expense growth, with both interest income and noninterest revenue contributing. But its profit also benefited from a credit-provision reversal. Evaluating the quarter therefore requires three separate checks: the group earnings baseline, the segment's operating drivers and the credit contribution. None alone establishes a durable growth rate.
Reset the earnings comparison first
Citi reported diluted EPS of $2.85, compared with $1.86 in the third quarter of 2025. Last year's results included a $726 million pretax goodwill impairment, or $714 million after tax, associated with the agreement to sell a 25% stake in Banamex. That charge reduced the comparison period's earnings; it is not a new operating gain in the current quarter.
Excluding the prior-year notable item, the comparison EPS was $2.24 and growth was 27%, according to Citi's non-GAAP reconciliation. Both figures matter. The reported result records the actual accounting outcome, while the adjusted comparison helps separate the absence of last year's charge from subsequent progress. The adjustment should be explicitly labeled rather than presented as the only earnings measure.
Share repurchases also reduced the share count, according to the release. Consequently, even the adjusted per-share growth rate should not be interpreted as the growth rate of the underlying business. A reader needs revenue, costs and credit alongside EPS to understand the improvement.

Services generated $6.614 billion of revenue. Treasury and Trade Solutions contributed $4.902 billion, up 16%, while Securities Services contributed $1.712 billion, up 13%. These are third-quarter comparisons with the same period in 2025, not annual forecasts.
The supplement shows Services net interest income increasing 17% to $4.472 billion. Average deposits reached $1.037 trillion, up 16%. Management attributed the interest-income increase to higher average deposit balances and deposit spreads. Larger balances provide one driver; the spread earned on them supplies another. Continued deposit growth would not by itself guarantee the same interest-income growth if spreads weakened.
Noninterest revenue increased 12% to $2.142 billion. Within that total, fee revenue increased 13% to $1.841 billion. The distinction prevents treating all noninterest income as fees: the category also includes principal transactions and other revenue. The two growth rates describe different totals, even though fee activity helped explain the broader increase.
Activity growth is encouraging, with qualifications
Citi reported cross-border transaction value and commercial card spending each increasing 10%, and US dollar clearing volume increasing 5%. These operating indicators help connect the revenue result to customer activity, rather than relying solely on an earnings headline.
Securities Services also benefited from growth in assets under custody and administration. The release says that increase included both newly onboarded assets and market valuations. Rising asset values can lift the measured custody base without representing an equivalent amount of new client business. The figure therefore needs that qualification before it is used as evidence of franchise expansion.
Treasury and Trade Solutions noninterest revenue also benefited from a more favorable currency-devaluation impact in Argentina. The disclosure is another reason to avoid extrapolating every component of this quarter's revenue growth as recurring customer-volume growth. The operating indicators support the direction of travel, but do not fully isolate its durability.
Check costs and credit before extrapolating profit
Services expenses were $2.976 billion, up 10%, with severance, other compensation and volume-related expenses among the drivers. Revenue growing faster than expenses indicates positive operating leverage for the period. It does not mean the cost base fell or that every future increment of revenue will arrive at the same profitability.
Net income after noncontrolling interests reached $2.637 billion, up 27%. That growth was stronger than revenue growth, but the provision for credit losses moved from a $61 million expense a year earlier to a $26 million benefit. The resulting $87 million favorable pretax swing helped the comparison. It should not be confused with additional fee income or treated as a guaranteed repeat benefit.
The next results should be read against three tests: whether deposit balances and spreads continue to support interest income; whether fee activity stays broad without relying excessively on valuations or currency effects; and whether expense growth remains below revenue growth. A renewed credit expense would also change the profit comparison. Citi's Services results show operating progress, while the adjusted EPS baseline and provision movement define the limits of the headline.
