Read the funding changes behind the earnings headline

Fifth Third's October 19 third-quarter report shows average deposits rising 3% sequentially to about $238 billion. The bank attributes the increase to operational growth, a Southwest retail campaign and former Comerica investment sweep balances moving onto its balance sheet. That combination matters when judging the durability of the funding improvement.

Money moving from an off-balance-sheet investment arrangement into a deposit can strengthen bank funding without representing a newly acquired customer relationship. Organic growth and a change in where existing customer assets sit answer different research questions. Investors should identify both before extending the quarterly growth rate into future periods.

For FITB, the most useful next step is to connect the deposit explanation to changes in earning assets and borrowing. A larger deposit base has potential value, but the earnings benefit depends on its cost, how long it stays and how the bank deploys or uses the funding.

The acquisition and conversion happened at different times

Fifth Third announced the completion of its Comerica merger on February 2, 2026. That announcement described a subsequent systems and brand conversion expected in the third quarter. Legal completion therefore preceded the operating transition that customers would experience.

On September 8, the bank announced that accounts belonging to approximately 600,000 customers and 293 banking centers had been converted over Labor Day weekend. Its disclosure said the companies were operating on a single platform and brand. The September milestone is historical context for today's earnings report, not a new acquisition announcement.

This sequence creates two comparison problems. Year-over-year growth can reflect the acquired franchise, while sequential changes can still reflect integration and product migration. Using the prior quarter removes some acquisition timing noise, but it does not automatically make every remaining increase organic.

A useful research record keeps the merger date, conversion date and financial reporting period in separate fields. That makes it easier to ask whether a later change came from a larger corporate perimeter, a product transition or new business won after the conversion.

Average and closing balances tell different stories

Average other short-term investments increased to $21.469 billion from $18.358 billion. Yet the period-end balance fell to $16.520 billion from $19.350 billion. Management explains that liquidity held earlier in the quarter was partly deployed into higher-yielding securities later in the period.

The two directions can coexist. An average reflects balances across the period; a closing figure describes one date. Neither should be substituted for the other when explaining quarterly earnings or constructing an opening balance-sheet assumption for the next quarter.

For illustration, consider a hypothetical account with equal-length monthly balances of 10, 25 and 10 units, compared with 14 units in each month of the preceding quarter. Its simple three-month average rises from 14 to 15, even though its closing balance falls from the prior quarter’s 14 to 10. This example describes arithmetic only; it is not a reconstruction of Fifth Third's daily balances or averaging method.

In a bank model, use the reported average for the period's yield analysis and the reported closing balance to frame what carries into the next period. Then test the assumed path between the two. Inferring an entire quarter's interest income from a single closing snapshot can produce a misleading growth estimate.

04

Funding substitution needs a cost and retention test

Average wholesale funding declined 10% sequentially to roughly $23 billion. That is consistent with deposits replacing some other funding, but it does not by itself establish the cost advantage of every migrated deposit.

The research question is whether the new mix remains attractive after deposit pricing and customer behavior are considered. A deposit that replaces borrowing can improve flexibility, while a high rate paid to retain it can limit the margin benefit. Those mechanisms can operate simultaneously.

Track deposit costs, funding balances and earning-asset allocation together in subsequent reports. Avoid treating securities purchases as loan growth or assuming that a lower short-term investment balance means the same amount left the bank. Changes within the asset portfolio and changes in customer funding belong in separate parts of the explanation.

05

What would change the assessment

Evidence supporting a durable improvement would include retained customer balances after conversion, acceptable deposit costs and a funding mix that supports earnings without an unexpected increase in risk. Evidence against it would include substantial post-conversion outflows, expensive retention efforts or asset deployment that fails to earn an adequate spread.

The September conversion release cautioned that anticipated merger benefits could be delayed or fail to materialize. Completing the technology work is a meaningful operating milestone; subsequent financial results are still needed to assess the economics of the combined franchise.

This article uses three original company disclosures, all from the same issuer. They establish the reported chronology and balances, while management's explanation remains an issuer account of the changes. The analysis does not assume a share-price response or quantify an undisclosed organic deposit-growth rate. Its conclusion is narrower: assess funding quality using migration, retention and deployment together, with average and period-end balances clearly distinguished.
