A revenue beat does not require a rising margin
TSMC's third-quarter results answer the profitability question left open by its monthly sales reports: the company expanded revenue strongly, but its gross margin fell from the preceding quarter. That combination deserves a more careful reading than either a simple growth celebration or a claim that the business weakened across the board.
The October 15 release reports US$46.72 billion of quarterly revenue, up 16.2% sequentially and 41.2% from a year earlier. Net income attributable to parent shareholders reached NT$763.06 billion, with diluted earnings of NT$29.43 per ordinary share. Those are reported results for the quarter ended September 30, not forecasts for the next quarter.
For holders of the US-listed ADR, the useful research question is whether additional sales are producing sustainable operating profit and cash after investment. Revenue, margin and cash flow each illuminate a different part of that question. None should substitute for the other two.
Compare against guidance and the prior quarter separately
The results presentation compares revenue with the earlier US$44.6 billion–US$45.8 billion guidance range. Actual revenue exceeded the upper end by US$0.92 billion, or approximately 2.0%, calculated from those disclosed figures. This is a comparison with company guidance, not an assertion that results beat analyst consensus.
Gross margin was 66.4%, within the earlier 65%–67% range, but below the second quarter's 67.7%. Operating margin was 58.7%, above the prior 56%–58% guidance range, yet below the preceding quarter's 60.3%. A result can therefore exceed an outlook and still decline sequentially.
That distinction matters when evaluating expectations. The guidance comparison asks whether the company delivered what it had indicated. The sequential comparison asks how the economics changed between quarters. Combining them into one verdict obscures information investors need for their next forecast.
The production ramp has a cost
Management attributes the sequential gross-margin decline primarily to dilution from the initial N2 technology ramp. The same report shows 2-nanometer technology contributing 8% of wafer revenue, compared with 3% in the preceding quarter. These disclosures connect an expanding new technology contribution with an explicitly identified near-term profitability cost.
They do not establish how quickly that cost will fade. A rising revenue share is evidence of commercial adoption; it is not, by itself, proof that the process has reached mature economics. The next useful evidence would be management's discussion of ramp efficiency and the subsequent margin trajectory.
Management also attributes the lower non-operating contribution mainly to the absence of the prior quarter's disposal and mark-to-market gains on Vanguard International Semiconductor shares. Investors should keep that comparison effect separate from foundry operating performance. It helps explain why the direction of net-profit growth need not match the pace of sales growth.

The unaudited cash-flow statement reports quarterly operating cash flow of NT$919.776 billion and purchases of property, plant and equipment of NT$443.206 billion. Subtracting the latter gives NT$476.570 billion using the statement's million-dollar precision. This calculation measures operating cash remaining after those purchases; it is not the total change in the cash balance, which also includes other investing and financing flows.
Operating cash flow rose while capital expenditure fell from the preceding quarter. Both movements support the improvement in cash left after capital spending. However, a single quarter does not establish a permanently lower investment requirement. Project timing can move payments between reporting periods.
The statement also distinguishes cash and cash equivalents from marketable financial instruments. Investors should preserve that distinction when comparing liquidity with cash generation: a balance-sheet stock is not a quarterly operating inflow.
The fourth-quarter outlook adds a forward test
Update: TSMC's full October 15 presentation guides fourth-quarter revenue to US$52.3 billion–US$54.3 billion. It forecasts gross margin of 65%–67% and operating margin of 56.5%–58.5%, using an exchange-rate assumption of NT$31.8 per US dollar. These are management forecasts, distinct from the completed-quarter results above.
The revenue midpoint is US$53.3 billion, approximately 14.1% above third-quarter revenue, calculated as 53.3 divided by 46.72 minus one. The gross-margin midpoint is 66.0%, below the reported third-quarter 66.4%. The outlook therefore reinforces the distinction between sales expansion and margin expansion. Realizing the revenue forecast would not automatically demonstrate that ramp dilution has ended.
What would change the interpretation
The constructive interpretation is that strong sales coexist with a disclosed ramp cost and improved cash generation after capital spending. It would strengthen if subsequent disclosures show continuing demand alongside easing ramp dilution. It would weaken if margin pressure persists without enough additional operating profit or if investment requirements absorb the apparent cash improvement.
The fourth-quarter outlook supplies a benchmark for the next results, not a guaranteed outcome. Before updating a valuation, keep completed-quarter evidence separate from forward assumptions. The disclosed figures alone do not establish customer-specific orders or explain a stock-price reaction.
